New Valiant LogoThis issue of Quantum and Woody reunites artist Tom Fowler with James Asmus while also giving a new take on the origins of everyone’s favorite goat sidekick, Vincent Van Goat. It’s full of excitement and laughs, while also ending with a twist that even old school Quantum and Woody fans will have to pay attention to.

The issue begins with Quantum and Woody trying to leave Vincent at a local petting zoo. What follows is a retelling of how Vincent left his original home and came to meet Quantum and Woody when they were much younger. Captured by some mad scientists, Vincent is experimented upon and given all sorts of abilities and then promptly uses those abilities to escape before meeting up with Quantum and Woody again. Proving too much for the petting zoo, Vincent joins the heroes again, but not before trying to tell them something pretty important. Quantum and Woody: Goat #0 Cover

This issue is great for not only being hilarious, but being pretty darn easy for new readers to jump into too. The recap page at the beginning helps, but the story is also pretty good at telling the reader things as it goes. I say this as someone who has only read the first issue of the series. Asmus and Fowler both plotted the story, with Asmus scripting and the duo make for a story that is at turns hilarious and heartbreaking. The comedy is a given considering the characters and Asmus is able to make it clever. Fowler’s art gives many of the characters a bit exaggerated expressions at times, which works wonderfully with the overall comedic nature of the story. He’s able to give each character plenty of emotion and expression, only enhancing the overall story.

This issue does a great balancing act of keeping things fun, but also serious and advancing the overall story. Even more so, it’s new reader friendly, which is becoming increasingly rare for any issue in an ongoing series at any publisher. Fans new and old can find something worth reading here.
